If Plantation and Conservation Are Ignored, Heatwave Menace Will Become Unbearable in the Future
- Lay Dwivedi
In recent days, many parts of the country and the world witnessed an unbearable rise in normal temperatures. Due to the extreme increase in temperature during afternoon hours in several regions, many people suffered from health-related problems, and roads appeared deserted. Newspapers extensively reported on the impact of heatwaves, while governments also issued advisories urging citizens to adopt necessary safety measures during such weather conditions.
In simple terms, a heatwave refers to a significant rise in atmospheric temperature beyond levels that are suitable for the human body, thereby posing serious health risks. The Earth’s temperature has been rising continuously, and new records of maximum temperatures are being set almost every year. The reasons behind these developments are well known. The disruption of natural balance and environmental systems is largely responsible for the increasing temperatures. Declining forests and vegetation, rapid population growth, and the extensive use of products and facilities resulting from scientific and technological advancement are among the root causes of this problem.
Speaking of the environment, World Environment Day is observed every year on June 5. Various programs and activities are organized on this occasion to promote environmental conservation and encourage public participation in protecting the environment. Major factors contributing to environmental degradation include continuous deforestation, increasing pollution, uncontrolled exploitation of natural resources, and climate change. To maintain ecological balance, it is essential to live in harmony with nature and ensure adequate environmental protection by planting more trees and safeguarding existing forest resources.
Forests are the primary source of oxygen, which forms the basis of life on Earth. They also play a crucial role in controlling carbon dioxide, one of the major greenhouse gases responsible for rising temperatures. The decline in forest cover not only reduces the amount of oxygen in the atmosphere but also disturbs environmental balance.
On the occasion of World Environment Day, numerous tree plantation drives and environmental awareness programs are conducted. However, it is equally important to ensure the protection and proper nurturing of saplings after they are planted so that they can grow into healthy trees. Similarly, the forests that currently exist are invaluable to human life, and protecting these natural resources is one of our foremost responsibilities.
Trees also serve as habitats for birds and countless other species, all of which contribute significantly to maintaining the Earth’s ecological balance. The reduction in tree cover has adversely affected bird populations and biodiversity, a fact that cannot be ignored. Nature plays a vital role in creating and sustaining the favorable conditions necessary for human life. The effective functioning of all systems on Earth depends upon the coordination of various natural processes. Therefore, excessive human interference in nature’s systems is never desirable.
In conclusion, tree plantation and tree conservation are collective responsibilities that we must fulfill effectively to protect and promote the environment. If we fail to do so, we will not be able to provide future generations with a healthy, balanced, and sustainable natural environment.
